Pregnancy and childbirth are unique experiences that can vary greatly from person to person. In this episode, I have the privilege of welcoming Emily, a member of FitNest Mama, to share her remarkable birth story and her journey towards recovery.
Emily’s story is a powerful example of the strength and resilience of mothers during the birthing process and beyond. Let’s delve into her journey, from gestational hypertension to a surprising birth outcome and her path to recovery.
The Planned Pregnancy and Gestational Hypertension
Emily’s pregnancy was well planned. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she experienced gestational hypertension at 38 weeks. This condition, characterised by high blood pressure during pregnancy, can pose risks to both the mother and the baby. Emily’s experience with gestational hypertension was the first challenge on her path to motherhood.
The Induction Process: A Challenging Beginning
In preparation for the birth of her baby, Emily was induced due to her hypertension. Induction is a common medical procedure that helps initiate labour. However, Emily once induced, her cervix didn’t dilate as expected, despite experiencing frequent contractions and intense pain. The induction process can sometimes be physically and emotionally challenging, and Emily’s experience was no exception.
From Caesarean to Surprise Birth
The hospital then proceeded to book Emily for a cesarean section due to the slow progression of labor. However, shortly before the scheduled surgery, her waters broke, and laboyr intensified. This unexpected turn of events led to a shift in plans, and Emily adapted to the rapidly changing circumstances. She received an epidural to manage the pain and continued to labour on.
As the hours passed, Emily faced a long pushing phase during labor. While it was a physically demanding process, her determination and strength shone through. Finally, the moment arrived, and Emily gave birth to her baby through vacuum-assisted delivery. The gender of the baby was a delightful surprise to both Emily and her partner.
A Prolapse Diagnosis and Recovery Journey
Post-birth, Emily faced an unexpected challenge. She was diagnosed with a grade one anterior wall prolapse, a condition where the bladder protrudes into the vaginal wall. Emily initially struggled with the diagnosis, feeling upset and conducting extensive research to understand her condition. The constant awareness of the prolapse and its symptoms took a toll on her mental well-being.
However, Emily’s recovery journey was marked by resilience. Over time, her symptoms improved, and she focused on physical recovery through exercises. Emily embraced the guidance of her physiotherapist and even considered using a pessary to manage her symptoms. The gradual improvements in her physical condition brought a renewed sense of positivity, which has continued to grow.
