In this recent episode, Kristy, a member of FitNest Mama and experienced surrogate, shared her incredible journey through surrogacy. Her surrogacy podcast birth story is a remarkable mix of personal childbirth experiences and the generous act of becoming a gestational carrier for other families.

From Personal Pregnancy to Surrogacy

Kristy’s journey into surrogacy began after she met a parent of swimmers she coached who had been a surrogate twice. This parent’s story intrigued and inspired Kristy. After having two children of her own, she felt a strong desire to help others build their families. She did thorough research and discussed the idea with her husband, who eventually supported her decision.

Understanding Surrogacy: Gestational Carrier vs. Surrogate Mother

In the podcast, Kristy explained an important difference in surrogacy terms. A gestational carrier, or surrogate, has no genetic link to the baby they carry, unlike a traditional surrogate mother. This difference helps in understanding the emotional and physical aspects of the surrogacy process.

Physical Recovery After Surrogacy

During her third pregnancy, Kristy experienced unexpected pelvic floor issues. As a keen runner, she continued her exercise routine, which led to prolapse symptoms. This condition was new and challenging for her, so she sought help from a pelvic floor physiotherapist and joined FitNest Mama. Despite these challenges, Kristy stayed committed to her surrogacy journey and managed her symptoms effectively.

Kristy’s Fourth Pregnancy: Preparedness and Support

With her fourth pregnancy, Kristy felt better prepared to manage her pelvic floor symptoms. She went through IVF, and the pregnancy went smoothly. The intended parents were involved throughout the process, attending appointments virtually or in person. This pregnancy and delivery were emotionally fulfilling for Kristy, as she saw the intended parents meet their baby for the first time.

Recovery and Support

Kristy’s recovery from her fourth pregnancy was more deliberate and careful. She allowed herself plenty of rest and did pelvic floor exercises. FitNest Mama played a significant role in her recovery by providing resources, pre and postnatal exercises, and support through their community.

Kristy’s story is a powerful example of the strength and dedication of surrogates. Her journey highlights the physical and emotional complexities of surrogacy, as well as the immense joy it can bring to families. For those interested in surrogacy or looking for support in their own journeys, Kristy’s experiences offer valuable insights and inspiration.

What is the difference between a gestational carrier and a surrogate mother?

A gestational carrier, or surrogate, carries a baby that is not genetically related to her, whereas a traditional surrogate mother uses her own egg, making her genetically linked to the baby.

How can you manage pelvic floor health during pregnancy?

Managing pelvic floor health involves taking care of your health in general, being aware of any pelvic health concerns, and seeking support from a pelvic floor physiotherapist if there are any issues, along with providing the support for your body to rest, recover and rehabilitate after delivery.

What kind of support is available for surrogates during their journey?

Laws and ethics surrounding surrogacy vary from country to country. Support for surrogates can include medical and emotional support and guidance from agencies, healthcare professionals, and support communities.

How can one ensure a smooth postpartum recovery?

A smooth postpartum recovery can be ensured by allowing the body ample rest, engaging in pelvic floor exercises, and gradually returning to physical activities. Seeking professional help and using resources from communities like FitNest Mama can also be beneficial.
